Wind, Hail, and Nothing to Hide Behind: Designing for a Box Elder Prairie Lot
Open grassland east of the Hills does not shelter a house. There is no canyon wall, no timber, no ridge upwind. Whatever the weather is doing, the house takes it directly, on all four sides, every day of its life. That single fact should drive more design decisions on a Box Elder lot than the floor plan does.
Most plans we see brought to us were drawn for sheltered ground. They work fine in a subdivision with mature trees. Set them on open prairie without changing anything and the owner spends the next twenty years fighting the site. Below is what we change, and why.
Wind Decides Where the Doors Go
Start with the front door. On a sheltered lot, entry orientation is a curb-appeal question. On open grassland it is a usability question. A door facing into the prevailing wind is hard to open, harder to close, and pulls weather into the entry every time it swings. We orient the primary entry away from the prevailing direction, or we recess it behind a wing of the house so the wall does the work instead of the door hardware.
Garage doors deserve more thought than they get. They are the largest openings in the building and the least weather-tight. A garage door facing the prevailing wind sees constant pressure on the panels and the seals, and it collects whatever the wind is carrying. Turn that opening ninety degrees and most of the problem disappears. If the plan will not allow it, the door specification has to carry more load, which is a real cost that never appears on a plan set drawn somewhere else.
Snow Does Not Fall Here, It Travels
Snow on open prairie is a transport problem, not an accumulation problem. It arrives sideways from somewhere upwind, and it drops wherever the wind slows down. Anything vertical creates that slow spot: the house, a shop wall, a fence, a row of parked equipment. The drift forms downwind of the obstruction, and it forms in the same place every year.
That predictability is the useful part. We site the house and the shop so their drifts land on ground nobody needs to cross, not across the driveway or against the garage doors. We keep the approach to the entry out of the lee side. Owners who skip this step end up moving the same drift with the same machine every winter for the life of the house, and no amount of finish work makes up for it.
Porches You Will Actually Use
A covered porch on the wrong side of a prairie house is expensive square footage that sits empty. Wind makes an exposed porch unusable most of the year regardless of temperature. The porches that get used out here are the ones tucked into an inside corner, on the leeward side, or sheltered by an ell of the building itself. Give the outdoor space a windbreak built out of house and it becomes the room people actually sit in. Hang it on the exposed elevation because the plan showed it there and it becomes storage.
Hail Is a Materials Decision, Made Early
Hail is not a design problem. It is a specification problem, and it gets settled during selections rather than after a storm. The roof carries the most exposure, so impact-rated products are the baseline on our prairie builds, not the upgrade line item. Roof geometry helps too: simple planes with fewer valleys give hail and water less to work with.
Siding is the decision owners underweight. Some products take a hit and shrug it off, some dent permanently, and some look fine until the finish fails a few seasons later. Exposure matters more than average performance here, because every elevation is a weather elevation. Gutter guards get specified for debris and ice, and hail is a fair reason to choose the sturdier ones. Skylights deserve honesty: they are a hole in your best defense, and if a client wants one, we say plainly what that means for maintenance and long-term risk instead of quietly detailing around it.
Sun With No Tree Cover
Unfiltered sun on all four elevations is the other half of an open lot. West glazing is where it shows up first. A wall of west-facing glass looks spectacular in a rendering and cooks the room from mid-afternoon until sunset for a third of the year. We size west openings deliberately, place the rooms that tolerate afternoon heat behind them, and use overhangs sized for the actual sun angle rather than a default depth. Overhangs also earn their keep against wind-driven rain.
Thermal mass is worth considering when the plan allows it. Slab floors and interior masonry absorb afternoon heat and release it after dark, which suits a climate where the temperature drops hard overnight. It is not a substitute for a properly designed envelope. It is a lever that costs little at design time and nothing afterward.
A Tight Envelope Is a Wind Problem First
Air sealing gets sold as an energy feature. On exposed ground it is a comfort feature. Constant pressure on the walls drives air through every gap in the assembly, and the result is cold floors, drafts along exterior walls, and a heating system running against an active leak. Wind turns a mediocre envelope into an obvious one. Continuous air barriers, careful detailing at penetrations, and a blower-door number that gets verified instead of assumed are how that gets handled. The engineering discipline we bring from outside the trades shows up here more than anywhere else in the build.
Landscaping Is Infrastructure, Not Decoration
A shelterbelt is the single best long-term investment on an open lot, and it is also the slowest. Trees planted the year you build will not do meaningful work for a decade. That is precisely why the planting plan belongs in year one, sited by the same wind analysis that placed the house. Get the rows in the ground while the equipment is already on site and the house grows into its shelter. Wait until the landscaping budget recovers and you have pushed real protection out another ten years.
Why the Cheap Answer Costs in June
Every shortcut described above saves money at framing. Standard roofing instead of impact-rated. The plan’s garage orientation instead of the site’s. Skipping the site-specific drift study because the lot looks flat. None of it shows up in the finished photos, and all of it is invisible until the first serious June storm or the first February wind that finds the gaps.
We would rather spend the extra hours in preconstruction. Walking the lot, reading the exposure, and settling the material specifications before anything is ordered costs the schedule almost nothing and settles the questions permanently. That is the whole argument for planning the way we plan.

Prairie Lot Design Questions
Can I build a plan I already have on an open Box Elder lot?
Usually, with changes. The plan’s room layout is generally fine. What needs revisiting is orientation, entry and garage door placement, porch location, and west glazing. Those adjustments are inexpensive on paper and very expensive after framing.
How do you figure out where snow will drift?
By reading the site and the prevailing direction, then placing buildings so their drifts fall on ground you do not use. Drifts form downwind of anything vertical and they repeat in the same place each winter, which makes them plannable rather than random.
Is impact-rated roofing standard on your prairie builds?
Yes. On exposed ground east of the Hills we treat it as the baseline specification rather than an upgrade to consider later. The same thinking drives siding selection and the gutter guard choice.
Should we plant trees before or after the house is finished?
Plan the shelterbelt in year one and plant as early as the schedule allows. Trees need roughly a decade to do real work, so every year you delay is a year the house stands unprotected.
